2023 Wedding Trend Forecast: 6 New Trends and 3 Disappearing Trends

Trends in the wedding industry are always changing at a rapid pace! And now with the popularity of tik tok, intsagram, and pinterest, as it relates to the wedding world, trends are being shared even faster! Here are 6 trends I predict we will see more of in 2023, and 3 trends that will be disappearing:

NEW TRENDS:

Hand Written Stationery:

A trend that I have been seeing everywhere recently is stationery with hand drawn or hand written elements! We are seeing a shift to a more casual and artistic approach towards wedding invitations and signage, and less of the formal letterpress/gold foil invitations that have dominated the industry for the last few years. Here are some of our favorite examples:

Documentary Photography:

Another trend that has taken the wedding industry by storm this year (and will only continue to grow into next year) is the Documentary or Editorial Style photography. Almost all of my clients for next year are requesting this style of photography- with an emphasis on capturing candid moments, in a film like style. Less and less of my clients are wanting posed portraits on their wedding day. Here are some of our favorite examples:

Danielle Frankel Wedding Dresses:

It seems that every “it girl” was wearing a Danielle Frankel dress in 2022, as we saw her designs everywhere! Danielle Frankel is to 2022 what Haley Paige was to 2015. Heading into 2023, I think we are going to see much more of this designer, or designers similar to her! You can recognize Frankel’s dresses for their unique shape and movement, with lots of pleating, drop waists, and billowing fabrics! Here are a few examples of some of our favorite Danielle Frankel designs:

Destination Weddings:

If your tik tok “for you page” looks anything like mine, then you know that there is a huge demographic of couples saying “i do” abroad next year! I myself have seen a greater amount of inquiries for destination weddings than I have seen for local weddings. In particular, it seems Italy will be a big wedding destination in the year 2023. I personally have 4 weddings in Italy next year. I suspect we will be seeing a lot more couples move towards more intimate weddings in amazing destinations in 2023. Here are some of our favorite destination venues we’ve got our eyes on in 2023:

Blusher veils:

Wearing a veil on your wedding day always has been and always will be in style. However, we have definitely seen veil styles change and adapt to the trends. One trend I think we will be seeing a lot more of in 2023 in blusher veils. Blusher veils are veils that are made to go over your face during the ceremony- which can create a very romantic and elegant look for your wedding day! Below are some of our favorite examples of blusher veils we have seen:

Barn Weddings:

As much hate as barn weddings have gotten in the past, I think we are going to see a complete resurgence of country barn weddings in 2023. We already got a taste of it in 2022 with Jennifer Lopez’s wedding and Anna Sophia Robb’s wedding. I don’t think we are going to go all the way back to mason jars and burlap, but you can definitely expect to see a more elevated rustic wedding aesthetic in 2023. Here are some 2022 barn weddings that have us convinced:

DISAPPEARING TRENDS:

Wedding Exits:

One trend I think we will see start to die out in 2023 is a grand wedding exit. What we have seen for the past few years is couples exiting their wedding under a tunnel of sparklers, streamers, etc. and getting straight into a car to take them to their hotel. However, with the rising popularity of after parties, exits are starting to die down, and in the next few years, I think they will die out all together.

Cocktail hour portraits:

Ever since I have been in the wedding industry, it has always been that we schedule formal portraits during “cocktail hour” so that while guests are eating and drinking, the bride and groom are taking family or wedding party pictures. This is typically done out of necessity, especially if the couple opted out of doing a first look. However, with the rising popularity of first looks and a shift towards less posed portraits in general, more and more couples are opting to join cocktail hour with their guests, and have their photographer follow them around as they mingle. Here are some of our favorite examples:

Cake Cutting:

Just like veils, cake at a wedding always has been and always will be a thing. However, the manner in which couples are cutting the cake has changed. In the past, cake cutting is typically something that was announced to guests so that they could watch the couple cut the cake, and also wait for their own slice. However, announcing the cake cutting is something we are no longer going to be seeing in 2023- due to a few reasons! The first reason being, that post COVID, a lot of cakes are now faux, meaning it is less of a show to see them be cut, because staff “takes it to the back” to be served. Another reason cake cutting is not a big deal anymore is because more couples are opting for multiple desserts and having a smaller cake just for pictures. Therefore there is no reason in announcing the cake being cut if not everyone is going to be served a slice of cake. Moving into 2023, I do not think we will see a lot of cake cutting being announced, and instead, the bride and groom will be pulled away by their photographer and planner to cut the cake discretely and usually just for picture purposes!
